Chapter 1 of After My Husband Took My Sister to Our Bed

The book was wrapped in navy paper with a silver ribbon. I had it pressed against my chest the whole elevator ride up.

A first edition. Steinbeck. He mentioned it once, two years ago, in passing, between phone calls. I had been hunting for it for six weeks. I found a dealer in Boston who finally sold me one in good condition. I paid too much. I didn't care. I kept picturing his face when he opened it.

The penthouse smelled like pine. The housekeeper had set the tree up that morning. White lights, no ornaments yet. He liked to do those himself. He said it was tradition.

"Caleb?" I called.

No answer.

I set my coat over the chair by the door. The hallway light was off. The bedroom door was cracked open, and I could see a strip of yellow lamp on the floor.

I heard her first. A small breath. Then his voice, low, saying something I couldn't make out.

I stopped.

The gift was still in my hand. I remember that. The weight of it. The shiny ribbon catching the hall light.

I pushed the door open.

Nora was in our bed. The sheet was twisted around her waist. Her hair was loose. She saw me first, and her mouth opened, and she made a sound like a hiccup.

Caleb turned his head on the pillow.

He did not flinch. He did not scramble. He looked at me the way you look at a delivery man who came to the wrong door. Surprised, then annoyed.

"Jesus, Evelynn." He sat up slowly. He didn't even pull the sheet up. "You're supposed to be at the gala."

I couldn't make my mouth work for a second.

The gala had ended an hour ago. I had left early because I wanted to give him the book before midnight.

Nora was already crying. She slid off the bed and gathered a robe from the floor and tried to disappear past me. I let her.

Caleb swung his legs over the side of the mattress and reached for his pants. He didn't hurry.

"Don't do the scene," he said. He pulled the pants on. "Please. I'm tired."

I looked at him. I waited. For something. For a flicker.

Nothing came.

"You should be grateful, you know." His voice was flat, conversational. He buttoned his cuffs. "That I come home at all. Have you looked in a mirror lately? You've got that pinched look. You always do, when you want something."

My throat closed.

"You couldn't even carry the baby, Evelynn. You can't hold a man's interest. You can't hold a pregnancy. What do you actually do?" He glanced up at me. "And you follow me around like a stray. It's exhausting."

The gift was still in my hand.

I walked to the hallway table, the one with the marble top and the little brass tray for keys. I set the book down. I straightened the ribbon. I don't know why I straightened the ribbon.

Then I walked back to the doorway. He was looking at me with a kind of bored impatience now, waiting for the crying to start so we could get through it.

I heard my own voice. It came out lower than I expected.

"I want a divorce."

He laughed. He actually laughed.

"Sure, baby." He stood, stretched. "Tell me again in the morning."

I didn't answer.

I walked down the hall. I closed the guest room door behind me. I sat on the edge of the bed in my coat, in my heels, with my hands flat on my knees.

I did not cry.

Something in my chest had gone very still. Not broken. Closed. Like a door you finally stop knocking on.

---

In the morning, I felt exactly the same.

I moved my clothes into the guest closet before he was awake. I pulled my passport, my birth certificate, my medical records out of the office safe and slid them into a folder at the bottom of my carry-on. I called Marian Cho, the attorney my college roommate had mentioned over dinner last year. I scheduled a meeting for Friday.

Caleb came into the kitchen at nine. He poured coffee. He read his phone. He glanced at me at the island and waited for the apology.

I sipped my coffee. It was too hot. I didn't put it down.

His eyes narrowed, just a little. He didn't say anything. He left for the office without a word.

He didn't change the locks. It didn't occur to him.

---

Marian's office was on the twenty-third floor of a building on Madison. Glass walls, gray carpet, a view of a brick airshaft. She was in her fifties, with a short silver bob and reading glasses on a chain.

She slid a sheet across the table. "Based on your prenup and the duration of the marriage, you're entitled to roughly thirty-eight percent of the combined marital assets. We're looking at the Tribeca property, the Hamptons house, equity in two of the holdings—"

"How fast," I said, "can we end it. Clean. No contest. No fighting."

She stopped. She set the pen down.

"Mrs. Nichols. I have to be honest with you. Walking away from what you're owed—that's financial suicide. You'd be giving up close to forty million dollars."

I looked at her.

"I'm not walking away from everything," I said. "Just from him."

She held my gaze for a long moment. Then she nodded once, picked up her pen, and started drafting.

I left with the papers in my bag.

Outside, the December wind cut through my coat. I stood at the curb and let it.

My hand drifted to my abdomen, to the thin ridge of the scar under the wool. I didn't notice until I caught my reflection in the cab window.
