Chapter 1 of After My Husband Sold Our House for His Nanny

Three weeks ago, I stood in the kitchen at two in the morning with our daughter crying upstairs and our son refusing to sleep in his own bed. My hands shook as I heated milk on the stove. The exhaustion wasn't just physical anymore. It lived in my bones, in the way I couldn't remember the last time I'd finished a sentence without losing my train of thought.

Trevor found me there, still in my bathrobe, still trying to soothe a child who wouldn't be soothed.

"Selena," he said quietly. He came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. "You can't keep doing this alone."

I turned to look at him. His face was soft with concern. Real concern, I thought. The kind that made my chest ache because it meant he still saw me, still cared that I was drowning.

"I'm fine," I said automatically.

"You're not." He took the milk pan off the burner and set it aside. "I've been thinking about this for a while. I want to hire someone to help you. A live-in nanny."

I stared at him. "Trevor, we don't need—"

"Yes, we do." His voice was firm but gentle. "You've given everything to this family. Let me give something back to you. Please."

I felt tears prick my eyes. When was the last time someone had tried to take care of me? When was the last time I'd let them?

"Okay," I whispered.

He kissed my forehead. "I already found someone. Her name is Kaeli Hunt. She has great references, and she can start next week."

I should have asked more questions. I should have wondered why he'd already gone ahead and hired her without telling me first. But I was so tired, and he was looking at me like he used to when we were first married, and I just wanted to believe that everything was going to be okay.

Kaeli arrived on a Tuesday morning. She was younger than I expected—late twenties, maybe thirty. Pretty in an effortless way, with long dark hair and a warm smile. She wore jeans and a simple sweater, nothing flashy, and she shook my hand with just the right amount of confidence.

"It's so nice to meet you, Mrs. Armstrong," she said. "Trevor has told me so much about you and the kids."

"Please, call me Selena." I showed her around the house, introduced her to the children. Our daughter, Emma, took to her immediately. Our son, Liam, was more cautious, but by the end of the first day, he was holding her hand.

That night, Trevor came home early. He found me in the living room with a book I was actually reading—not just holding while I stared at the same page for twenty minutes.

"See?" he said, smiling. "This is what I wanted. You, resting. You, having time for yourself."

I set the book down and went to him. "Thank you," I said, and I meant it. "I didn't realize how much I needed this."

He wrapped his arms around me. "I love you, Selena. I just want you to be happy."

I believed him.

For three weeks, it was everything he promised. I slept through the night. I took long showers without listening for crying. I even started cooking again—not because I had to, but because I wanted to. Kaeli was efficient and kind. She kept the children on schedule, helped with laundry, and never overstepped. She called me Mrs. Armstrong even though I'd told her not to. She stayed in her room most evenings after the kids went to bed.

She was perfect.

Too perfect, maybe. But I pushed that thought away every time it surfaced. I was just being paranoid. I was just so used to doing everything myself that it felt strange to have help.

Then, last Thursday night, I walked past the bathroom door and heard her voice. Low and soft, almost a murmur. I paused, my hand on the hallway wall.

"I miss you too," she said. A pause. Then a laugh—breathy, intimate. "I know. I can't wait either."

My stomach tightened. It was none of my business who she talked to. She was allowed to have a personal life. But something about the tone, the secrecy of it, lodged under my skin like a splinter.

I walked away before she came out. I didn't say anything to Trevor. I told myself I was being ridiculous.

But the unease stayed.

Yesterday, Trevor was in New York for a conference. He called me in the evening from his hotel room. I was in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner, and I propped my phone against the fruit bowl so I could see his face while I worked.

"How are the kids?" he asked.

"Good. Kaeli took them to the park this afternoon. They're exhausted."

"Good, good." He smiled, but he looked distracted. He glanced at something off-screen, then back at me. "And how are you?"

"I'm fine. Tired, but fine."

He shifted, adjusting the phone, and for just a second—less than a second—I saw the mirror behind him. The reflection of the room. And in it, a woman's silhouette. Slim, dark-haired, standing just out of frame.

My breath stopped.

"Selena? You still there?"

I forced my voice to stay steady. "Yeah. Sorry. I think the connection dropped for a second."

"Okay. Well, I should go. Early morning tomorrow. Love you."

"Love you too," I said automatically.

The call ended. I stood there, staring at the black screen, my hands gripping the edge of the counter.

It was her. I knew it was her.

Kaeli.

In his hotel room.

I set the phone down carefully, like it might shatter. My chest felt tight, like I couldn't pull in enough air. The kitchen was too bright, too warm. I walked to the window and pressed my forehead against the cool glass.

The nanny wasn't a gift.

She was his mistress.

He brought her into our home. He put her in a room down the hall from our children. He looked me in the eye and told me he loved me while she was standing in his hotel room in New York.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to break every dish in the cabinet. I wanted to call him back and demand the truth.

But I didn't.

I made myself a cup of tea. I sat by the window and watched the steam rise until the tea went cold in my hands.

By morning, I knew what I was going to do.

I wasn't going to scream. I wasn't going to cry. I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing I'd figured it out.

I was going to stay silent.

I was going to gather every piece of evidence I needed.

And then I was going to destroy him.
