Chapter 1 of After My Husband Humiliated Me, I Bankrupted Him

The dining room at the Payne penthouse smelled like lilies and old money. Sixteen places, white orchids down the center of the table, candlelight bouncing off crystal that cost more than my father ever made in a year. I sat where I always sat—two chairs down from Grant, close enough to be seen, far enough to not matter.

Eleanor Payne raised her glass somewhere between the fish course and the beef. She has Grant's same sharp chin, the same way of looking at you like she's already decided what you're worth.

"To family," she said, smiling at everyone but me. "And to Adalyn, of course. Grant, darling, you really do take good care of her. Like keeping a very expensive pet."

The table laughed. Soft, polite, the kind of laugh that knows exactly what it's doing.

I kept my eyes on my plate. I counted the tines of my fork. Four. I thought about the escapement wheel waiting for me at home, how many teeth it had, how patient metal is compared to people.

Grant didn't look at me. He lifted his wine and said something about the market to his uncle, easy, unbothered, like Eleanor had commented on the weather. I waited for him to say something. One sentence. That's all it would have taken.

He never did.

Something in me closed that night, quietly, like a door pulled shut in another room. I didn't cry. I didn't feel the urge to. I just understood, finally and completely, that I was never going to be anything more than furniture with a pulse in this house.

I went home and I went straight to the spare room Grant has never once opened the door to. My workshop. Loupe, tweezers, the smell of clock oil and brass. Grant's grandfather's pocket watch sat on the velvet cloth where I'd left it, the case open like a small gold heart. I'd spent eleven months on it. The mainspring had been snapped when I found it, the balance wheel warped, half the jewels missing from the train.

I set the loupe against my eye and bent over the escapement, and for a while there was nothing but the tiny click of the pallet fork, the patient breath of gears finding each other again. It was after one in the morning when I finally got the beat error down to under a millisecond. I sat back and looked at it, ticking clean and even under the lamp, and I realized I wasn't doing this for Grant anymore. I hadn't been for weeks. I was doing it because it was mine. Because I was good at it. Because somewhere in this apartment, that had to count for something, even if only to me.

The painting came three days later. Two men in gray uniforms wheeled a crate through the lobby like it was carrying a body. Grant tore into the wrapping himself, which I had never once seen him do for anything of mine. Underneath the padding was a canvas of violent red slashes on white, a name I recognized from auction headlines, and a card in looping handwriting: *Happy Birthday, G. Some things are worth waiting for. —M.*

"Seven figures," Grant said, mostly to himself, tilting his head at it like a man appraising a horse. "She has incredible taste."

I stood in the doorway with the pocket watch box in my hands. "I finished it," I said. "The watch. It's running at under two seconds a day now. That's—Grant, that's museum-grade accuracy."

He glanced up from his phone just long enough to say, "That's nice," and went back to directing the installer on where to hang Miley's painting. Two inches left. No, right. There.

I put the watch back in its box and didn't say anything else.

The following Tuesday I took the subway to Brooklyn, a leather folder under my arm, my father's handwriting inside it. Reign Freeman's office was above a bakery, small, no assistant at the front desk, just a man in shirtsleeves with sharp eyes that didn't move off my face the way most men's did.

"Adalyn Mendoza." He didn't smile, but he wasn't cold either. "Sit. Show me what you brought."

I laid it out—the licensing agreement, the termination clause, my father's notes, the patent registration with my name on it as sole heir. He read in silence for eleven minutes. I counted them.

When he finally looked up, something in his face had sharpened. "You understand what this is," he said, slow and deliberate, like he was choosing each word for weight. "This isn't just a strong case, Mrs. Payne. This is airtight."

I let out a breath I think I'd been holding since the day I signed my marriage certificate.

"Good," I said. "Then let's start.
