Chapter 1 of After My Husband Faked My Death for His Mistress

I was folding tiny onesies when the doorbell rang.

Three months pregnant and my hands still shook every time I touched the soft cotton. I couldn't believe it was real. A baby. Our baby. Julien's and mine.

I set the onesie down and walked to the door, one hand resting on the small swell of my belly. The marble floor was cool under my bare feet. The whole house was cool — Julien liked it that way, said it helped him think. I'd gotten used to wearing cardigans indoors.

I opened the door.

A woman stood on the threshold. Tall, composed, wearing a cream-colored dress that probably cost more than my car. She held a manila envelope in one hand. Her smile was gentle. Almost kind.

"Yara Jenkins?" she asked.

I nodded. "Yes?"

"I'm Melina Ward." She said it like I should know the name. Like it should mean something.

It didn't.

"Can I help you?" I asked.

She glanced past me into the foyer. "May I come in? This will take a few minutes."

Something in my chest tightened. But she looked so calm. So reasonable. I stepped aside.

She walked in like she'd been here before. Looked around the foyer with the ease of someone cataloging familiar details. She set her purse on the console table — the one Julien's mother had given us as a wedding gift — and turned to face me.

"I think we should sit," she said.

I didn't move. "What's this about?"

Melina opened the envelope. Pulled out a stack of photographs. Laid them on the console table one by one.

The first photo: Julien standing beside this woman in front of a small chapel. Both of them dressed in white. Her hand on his chest. His arm around her waist.

The second photo: Julien holding a baby. A newborn, wrapped in blue.

The third photo: A birthday party. Balloons, a cake shaped like a truck, and a little boy — maybe three years old — sitting on Julien's shoulders, laughing.

I stared at the images. My brain refused to process them. It was like looking at a word in a foreign language. The shapes were clear but the meaning wouldn't come.

"I'm sorry to do this," Melina said softly. "I really am. But it's time."

"Time for what?" My voice came out thin.

She pulled out a piece of paper. A receipt. "This is from the Rosewood Inn. Five years ago. June fourteenth."

June fourteenth.

Our wedding day.

"Julien and I had a commitment ceremony that afternoon," Melina continued. Her tone was so gentle. Like she was explaining something to a child. "Before your legal ceremony that evening. It was private. Just family."

I looked at her. Then at the receipt. Then at the photos.

"That's not possible," I whispered.

"I have a son," Melina said. "His name is Ethan. He just turned three. Julien's been with us every week. Sometimes more." She pulled out another photo. Julien and the boy at a park. Julien and the boy at a zoo. Julien and the boy and this woman at a dining table, all of them smiling.

"The Carter family knows," she added. "They've been wonderful. Diane — Julien's mother — she throws Ethan a birthday party every year. They celebrate our anniversary every June fourteenth. They've been very supportive."

The room tilted.

I reached for the edge of the console table. Held on.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

Melina's smile was patient. Pitying. "Because you're pregnant. And I think you should know the situation before you make any decisions."

"Decisions?"

"About whether you want to continue… this." She gestured vaguely around the foyer. At the house. At me. "Julien loves Ethan. He loves me. We're his real family. I think it's time to stop pretending."

I couldn't breathe.

"I'm his wife," I said. The words sounded stupid. Childish.

Melina nodded. "Legally, yes. But Julien's heart has always been with us. I'm not here to fight. I'm here to ask you to step aside gracefully. For everyone's sake."

She gathered the photos. Slipped them back into the envelope. Left it on the console table.

"Think about it," she said. She picked up her purse. Walked to the door. Paused. "I really am sorry, Yara. But it's better you know now."

She left.

I stood in the foyer, staring at the envelope.

My hand was still on my belly.

The baby kicked.

I didn't move.
