Chapter 1 of After My Dead Mate Came Home to His Mistress

The wind shifted at 4:47 in the afternoon, and my dead husband walked back into my lungs.

I was crouched by the supply crate at the north border, checking the seal on a wolfsbane shipment, when the current turned and carried him to me — pine resin, cedar, that particular warm-copper undernote I had spent five years trying to forget the shape of. My hand froze on the crate. The faded mark on my neck went cold, then hot, then cold again, like a pulse remembering how to beat.

Easton.

Alive.

And not alone.

Underneath his scent was a woman's — jasmine and something milky, something domestic — braided into his so completely that the layering was not accidental. It was months. Years. The kind of scent-stitching that only happens when two bodies have slept in the same sheets for a long, long time.

My wolf did not stir. She had not stirred in five years. But the hollow behind my sternum where she used to live gave one hard, sick lurch, like a room with no floor.

I stood up. I told the two Ironveil warriors with me that I'd caught the trail of a rogue and wanted to sweep it alone. They knew better than to argue with the Luna, even a half-broken one. I stepped past the border stone into unfamiliar territory and let the scent pull me.

It pulled me three miles.

The homestead sat in a shallow bowl of pines — a cedar-shingled house with smoke curling from the chimney and a garden fenced against deer. My legs stopped moving before I told them to. From the tree line I could see the porch, the front door, the little wooden step worn smooth by a family's coming and going.

The door opened.

He stepped out first. Five years had put weight on his shoulders, softness at his jaw. He was laughing at something over his shoulder. The Alpha I had married had never laughed like that — loose, unguarded, without an audience. He bent down and scooped up a small dark-haired boy who came barreling around the corner, and the child shrieked with delight and buried his face in Easton's neck.

A woman came out behind them. Slim, honey-haired, comfortable in her own skin the way you only get when a house is yours. She rested her hand on Easton's shoulder. Not possessive. Not staking. Just — home.

I pressed my palm flat against the cold mark on my neck and did not make a sound.

I stood in the pines for a long time. Long enough to watch her lean up and kiss the corner of his mouth. Long enough to hear the pup laugh again. Long enough for my mind to finish, quietly and thoroughly, the arithmetic of five years.

Then I turned and walked back the way I came, and by the time I crossed the border stone my face had settled into the same soft, tired composure it had worn every day since his funeral.

---

I got back to the pack house before dawn.

I made tea. I answered two messages from the eastern sentry. I sat with the Beta over morning reports and nodded in the right places. Nobody looked at me twice.

That night I passed the private sitting room and heard Elle's laugh — bright, careless, the laugh of a woman who has never once been listened to when she didn't want to be. I stopped in the hall and stood very still against the wall.

"Easton's accounts are flush through next quarter," she was saying. "She signed every transfer without blinking. Mother, honestly, at this point I could hand her a document that said I'm bankrupting the pack and she'd initial it and ask if I needed a pen refill."

Maxine's voice, dry and administrative: "Don't get sloppy. She's grieving, not deaf."

"She's furniture," Elle said. "Expensive furniture. Neo's going to need new boots before the frost — remind me to route it through the wolfsbane column, that one never gets questioned."

Neo.

The pup had a name in this house. They said it like they'd been saying it for years.

I walked away from the door without breathing. My coat — the grey one Elle had "borrowed" three weeks ago and never returned — was folded across her chair by the entryway. I picked it up on the way past. In the inner pocket, my fingers found paper.

I didn't unfold it until I was locked in my rooms.

Elle's handwriting. A financial summary. Routing numbers, quarterly totals, a column labeled H.H. — HALEY HARPER — and a smaller column labeled N. Addressed at the top, in her curling script: For E.

She had used my stolen coat as a writing surface. She had folded the letter into the pocket and forgotten it there.

I sat down on the edge of my bed with the paper flat across my knees, and I did not cry.

I pressed my fingertips to the faded mark on my neck. Cold. Empty. Mine.

"All right," I said to the hollow space behind my sternum, very quietly. "All right."

---

I did not sleep for the next forty-eight hours.

I pulled the locked box from under my bed — five years of handwritten transfer records, every Luna signature I had ever authorized, dated and cross-indexed — and I laid them out across the floor of my private study in overlapping rows. Then I laid Elle's letter beside them.

Routing number by routing number, the picture assembled itself.

Tribute payments from the southern vassal packs — rerouted. Territory revenues from the timber concession — rerouted. Three of the last four wolfsbane shipments — the profits skimmed at the ledger before they ever reached pack accounts. Every diversion had ridden out on my signature. Every one had passed through columns Maxine and Elle had built to look like maintenance costs, warrior stipends, healer supplies.

I photographed Elle's letter three times, each frame stamped with the pack correspondence seal that would authenticate it before any Council tribunal. I photographed the ledgers. I photographed the routing overlays.

At dawn on the second morning I locked the full evidence package into my private strongbox and turned the key twice.

Then I opened a map of the western border and set my finger on the checkpoint at Miller's Crossing — observed by warriors from the Blackpine and Ironroot packs, both of whom owed Ironveil trade favors and neither of whom Easton's family controlled.

That was where I would find him.

That was where the whole world would find him with me.

I folded the map. I pressed my fingers to the cold mark on my neck one more time.

Down the hall, Elle was laughing again.
