Chapter 1 of After My Boyfriend Mocked Me in His Friends’ Chat

I couldn't sleep.

It was one of those nights where my body was tired but my brain wouldn't shut off. I lay on my side, staring at the thin line of light under the bedroom door. Dillon was breathing slow and heavy next to me, dead to the world. His phone sat on the nightstand between us, screen down. It buzzed once. Then again.

I didn't think much of it. People get late texts. But then it buzzed a third time, and a fourth, rapid little pulses like a heartbeat, and something in my chest tightened.

It wasn't suspicion. Not exactly. It was more like a feeling I'd been carrying around for months without naming it. A low hum of wrongness, like a sound you stop noticing until someone turns it off. I'd been swallowing it with coffee and routine and the steady work of keeping things smooth.

I picked up his phone.

His passcode was his birthday. He never changed it. The screen opened to a text thread with a name I didn't recognize at first — just a single letter, S, with a purple heart emoji. I scrolled up.

The messages were explicit. Graphic. Photos I had to blink at twice before my brain caught up with what I was seeing. A woman's body in low light, angles chosen carefully. And Dillon's responses — hungry, eager, the kind of language he hadn't used with me in over a year.

Sabrina Powell.

I knew the name. His college crush. The one he mentioned sometimes with a careful, distant tone, like she was a chapter he'd closed. She wasn't closed. She was right here, in his phone, at 3 a.m., sending him pictures while I lay six inches away.

My thumb kept scrolling. I couldn't stop. The thread went back months.

Then I found the group chat.

It was labeled "The Boys" with a beer emoji. Dillon, Derek Huang, and three other names I half-recognized from barbecues and game nights. I tapped in.

The first thing I saw was a photo of me. It was from a dinner party last month — I was laughing, holding a glass of wine, wearing a green dress I'd felt good in. Under it, Dillon had typed: "The tank reporting for duty lmao."

Derek replied with three crying-laughing emojis.

Someone else wrote: "Bro she could bench press you."

Dillon: "She basically does. Pays for everything too 😂"

I scrolled further. There were more. Weeks and weeks of it. Comments about my arms, my shoulders, my weight. Jokes about how I ate. Screenshots of my texts to Dillon where I asked if he wanted dinner, reframed as comedy. "She's literally begging to feed me bro."

I read every single one.

Something in me didn't break. It went cold. Like a pilot light clicking off. I set the phone back on the nightstand, screen down, exactly where it had been. Dillon didn't move.

I got out of bed quietly. Walked to the kitchen. Sat down at the table in the dark.

My apartment. My table. My rent. The lease was in my name. The utilities were in my name. The groceries I carried up three flights of stairs every Sunday — mine. I'd been covering his half for almost a year. He always had a reason. His freelance check was late. His car needed work. He'd get me back next month. Next month never came.

I opened the notes app on my phone. The one where I logged expenses — a habit I'd picked up because somewhere in the back of my mind, I always knew I was keeping score even when I told myself I wasn't.

I started adding it up. Rent: fourteen months of his half. Utilities. Groceries. The leather jacket I bought him for his birthday because he'd pointed at it three times in the store window. The dinner tabs. The Uber rides when his car was "in the shop."

The number grew. I kept going.

By the time light started leaking through the kitchen window, I had a figure. I stared at it. Then I made coffee. Black. I sat with the mug between my hands and waited.

Dillon came out around eight. He was wearing boxers and one of my old college t-shirts, which he'd claimed months ago without asking. He yawned, scratched his jaw, and looked at me like I was part of the furniture.

"You're up early," he said.

"Sit down."

Something in my voice made him pause. He pulled out a chair and sat. I set my phone on the table between us, the notes app open.

"You owe me eleven thousand, four hundred and sixty-two dollars," I said. "That's rent, utilities, groceries, and the jacket. I rounded down."

He laughed. A short, confused sound. "What?"

"I also read your texts with Sabrina Powell last night. And the group chat. The one where you and your friends call me a tank."

The laugh died. His face went through three expressions in two seconds — surprise, then calculation, then something soft and wounded that I recognized immediately. It was the face he made when he was about to make this my fault.

"Babe," he started. "You went through my phone? That's — "

"Don't."

He stopped.

"I paid your rent for fourteen months," I said. "I bought your groceries. I covered every dinner. And you sat in group chats with your friends and made fun of my body while you sexted another woman in our bed."

"It's not — it wasn't serious with her. She's just — "

"I don't care what she is." My voice was level. Flat. I didn't recognize it. "You have until noon to get your things out."

That was when the playbook shifted. The charm dropped and the guilt came in. His eyes got wet. His voice cracked. "Elaina, come on. You know I love you. I messed up, okay? I know I messed up. But you can't just — we've been together for three years. You're gonna throw that away over some stupid texts?"

Three years. I thought about that number. Three years of smoothing things over. Three years of making myself smaller so he'd stay comfortable. Three years of pretending the hum of wrongness was just background noise.

"Get your things," I said.

He tried twice more. Once with anger — "You're being crazy right now" — and once with a bargain — "Just give me a week to figure things out." I didn't respond to either. I went to the bedroom, pulled his clothes from the closet, and put them in garbage bags. His shoes. His charger. The PlayStation he'd set up in my living room without asking. I carried it all to the hallway outside my front door.

Dillon followed me, half-dressed, voice rising. "You're seriously doing this? Over a joke?"

I set the last bag down and turned back toward the door. He grabbed my wrist. Not hard. But firm. His fingers wrapped around the bone and held.

"You're overreacting," he said. His voice cracked again. "You know that, right?"

I looked down at his hand on my wrist. Then I reached over with my other hand, peeled his fingers off one by one, and let his arm drop. I held the door open and waited.

He stared at me. I think he was looking for the version of me that would fold. The one who'd sigh and say okay and let him back in and pretend this never happened. She'd been reliable for three years.

She wasn't home.

He picked up the bags. He left.

I closed the door. Locked it. Slid down against it until I was sitting on the floor with my knees pulled up. The apartment was quiet. My apartment. My quiet.

I sat there for a long time.

Then I called Cassandra.

She didn't ask questions on the phone. She just said, "Twenty minutes," and hung up. She showed up with a bottle of red, a bag of chips, and a blanket. She sat on the couch and let me talk.

I told her everything. The sexts. The group chat. The word tank. The fourteen months of rent. The way he grabbed my wrist at the door. I talked until my voice went thin and my coffee went cold.

Cassandra listened. She didn't interrupt. She didn't say I told you so, even though she'd earned it a hundred times over. When I finally stopped, she was quiet for a moment. Then she asked, in that careful way she had, the way that always cut straight through whatever wall I'd built: "But how do you actually feel about it?"

I stared at the wall behind her. At the nail hole where Dillon's framed jersey used to hang.

I didn't have an answer. I was still too busy holding myself together to figure out what was underneath.

"I don't know yet," I said.

She nodded. "That's okay." She poured me more wine. "You will."

Monday came fast. I put on a gray blazer, straightened my hair, and drove to the office like nothing had changed. At my desk, I lined up my pens. Parallel. Squared my papers. Opened my laptop. The hum of the open floor plan settled around me — keyboards, low voices, the coffee machine gurgling in the break room.

"Hey, everyone." Our manager's voice cut through the noise. "Quick intro — Zayne Reyes is joining us from the Portland office. Zayne, welcome aboard."

I glanced up.

He was younger than most of the team. Dark hair, easy posture, the kind of smile that looked like it came naturally and not because he was performing it. He shook hands down the row, said something that made Lena Park laugh, and moved through the space like he'd been here before.

When he got to my desk, he stopped.

"Zayne," he said, and extended his hand.

"Elaina." I shook it. Brief. Professional.

His eyes held mine for a beat longer than the others had gotten. Not aggressive. Not flirtatious. Just — certain. Like he was confirming something he already knew.

I filed it away as irrelevant and turned back to my screen.

My pens were perfectly parallel. My papers were squared. Everything was in order.

Everything except the quiet, hollow space behind my ribs that I hadn't figured out how to name yet.

Slowly, Then Forever: The Drama That Knows Fear Is Louder Than Fate
Slowly, Then Forever is a short drama on DramaWave built around a deceptively simple premise: two people who are genuinely bad at being loved. What separates it from the crowded slow-burn genre is its insistence that the real obstacle isn't circumstance — it's the terror of needing someone. For viewers who want emotional precision over melodrama, this one pays off.
