Chapter 1 of After My Boyfriend Gave My Award to His Muse

The ballroom glittered like a jewelry box. Chandeliers threw light across white tablecloths and champagne flutes. Everyone wore black tie or evening gowns. I sat near the back in a navy dress I'd picked because it wouldn't draw attention. My heart beat fast and light in my chest.

Darren was backstage. He was about to accept the Innovation Award for the adaptive interface platform—the one I'd spent eighteen months designing. I'd filled three notebooks with wireframes and logic trees. I'd rewritten the core algorithm six times. I'd presented it to the engineering team, walked them through every edge case, answered every question.

But tonight wasn't about credit. It was about the work finally being seen. That was enough. That had always been enough.

The lights dimmed. A woman in a red gown stepped to the podium and read Darren's name. Applause filled the room. I clapped too, smiling, watching him walk onstage in his perfectly tailored tux. He looked calm. Confident. He always did.

He took the microphone and thanked the committee. He thanked the engineering team. He thanked Howard Enterprises. Then he paused, and his voice softened.

"But I have to be honest," he said. "This project wouldn't exist without one person. Someone who brought vision, creativity, and brilliance to every stage of development."

My breath caught. My hands stilled in my lap.

"Jovie Patterson," Darren said. "The muse who made it all possible."

The applause swelled again. I heard it from far away, like I was underwater. A woman in a silver gown stepped into the spotlight. Jovie Patterson. Blonde. Smiling. She crossed the stage and stood beside Darren. He handed her the award. She held it up, laughing, and the cameras flashed.

I sat very still. My face didn't move. My hands stayed flat on the table. I watched Jovie lean into the microphone and say something about inspiration and collaboration. I watched Darren put his arm around her shoulders. I watched the audience stand and clap.

I didn't stand. I didn't clap. I didn't blink.

Someone at my table asked if I was okay. I said yes. My voice sounded normal. I picked up my champagne and held it. I didn't drink.

The ceremony ended. People moved toward the reception hall. I stayed in my seat until the ballroom was almost empty. Then I stood, smoothed my dress, and walked out.

The reception was loud. Music played. People laughed and talked in clusters. I found a spot near the terrace doors where the noise was softer. I held my champagne and looked at nothing.

"You're Mallory Bishop."

I turned. A man stood a few feet away. Tall. Dark suit. He wasn't smiling, but he wasn't cold either. His face was calm, watchful.

"I'm Sterling Mitchell," he said.

I knew the name. CEO of Apex Dynamics. Darren's biggest competitor.

"I read your paper on adaptive UI frameworks two years ago," he continued. "The one in the Journal of Interactive Systems. It was excellent."

I blinked. "Thank you."

"I recognized your work tonight," he said. "In the platform Howard just won for."

I looked at him. He looked back. He didn't say anything else. He didn't need to.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a business card. He wrote something on the back with a pen, then handed it to me.

"If you ever want to talk," he said. "About work. Or anything else."

I took the card. His personal cell number was written in neat, small letters on the back.

"Thank you," I said again.

He nodded once and walked away. I slipped the card into my purse.

I found Darren backstage an hour later. He was alone in a hallway, checking his phone. He looked up and smiled when he saw me.

"There you are," he said. "I was looking for you."

I stopped a few feet away. I didn't smile back.

"Mallory," he said. His voice dropped. Soft. Calm. The voice he used when he wanted me to agree with him. "I know tonight was complicated. But you understand, right? Jovie's family is funding the next phase. This was strategic. Not personal."

"Strategic," I repeated.

"Exactly." He stepped closer. "You're overreacting. You know how this works. We're a team. You and me. We've always been a team."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. At the smooth, reasonable expression. The slightly furrowed brow that meant concern. The tilt of his head that meant patience.

"We were never a team," I said. "I built everything. You took credit. For five years."

His face changed. Just a little. "Mallory—"

"I'm done," I said. "I quit. Effective immediately."

He blinked. "You can't quit. You signed a contract."

I reached into my purse and pulled out my leather notebook. The one I carried everywhere. The one filled with every concept, every framework, every original idea that had ever gone into his company.

"This was never yours," I said. "None of it was."

I turned and walked down the hallway. He didn't follow. He didn't call my name. He just stood there, holding his phone, watching me leave.

I drove home in silence. I unlocked my apartment door, dropped my purse on the floor, and sat down in the middle of the empty living room.

Then I started counting.

Every party where he introduced me as "my girlfriend" and never "our lead designer." Every presentation where my name disappeared from the slides. Every late night I spent solving his problems while he attended dinners I was never invited to. Every "we make a great team" that meant "you make me look great."

I counted for a long time.

When I was done, I pulled Sterling Mitchell's card from my purse and stared at the number on the back.

I didn't call. Not yet.

But I didn't throw it away either.
