After My Alpha Rejected Me, The Lycan Prince Protected Me

My second thought, after the silver fur receded and I was standing in torn clothes before the assembled Lycan Court, was that my wolf was already orienting toward Jensen's scent with a certainty that no herb could override.

That was the most terrifying thing that had ever happened to me.

I shifted back. My bones cracked into place. The aura lifted. Around me, wolves were climbing to their feet, shaking off the instinctive submission my wolf had forced on them. Garrett was still on his knees, staring at the ground like he'd seen the Moon Goddess herself.

I looked down at my shredded shirt. My ruined shoes. The tablet I'd dropped was cracked on the ground beside me.

Jensen walked over. Slowly. His expression was calm. Unbothered. Like watching a she-wolf erupt into rare Alpha-lineage silver fur in the middle of a training session was a completely normal Tuesday.

He stopped in front of me. Close enough that I could smell his scent—cedar, warmth, something that made my wolf purr.

"Are you all right?" he asked quietly.

No witnesses were close enough to hear.

I met his eyes. "I'm fine."

My wolf called me a liar.

Jensen tilted his head slightly. He didn't push. He just looked at me for a long moment, reading something I didn't want him to see, then took off his jacket and handed it to me.

I took it. Put it on. It smelled like him.

My wolf purred louder.

"We're done for the day," Jensen said, addressing the training grounds at large. His Alpha tone hummed in the air. "Dismissed."

The wolves scattered. Fast.

Garrett was gone before I could blink.

The gifts started arriving the next morning.

Formal recognition packages from pack Alphas who had previously ignored my existence. Small carved tokens. Ceremonial herbs. A handwritten note from the Crescent Ridge Alpha congratulating me on my "emergence into rightful standing."

I stared at the pile on my kitchen counter. Counted six packages. Set them aside.

My phone buzzed. Andi.

**The forum is losing its mind.**

I opened the app. My anonymous account had forty-seven new notifications. The post Sunny had written—a detailed, gleeful description of the silver wolf awakening—had been shared across six pack networks and was currently the top thread in three forums.

I scrolled through the comments. Read them twice. Then logged into my account and started typing.

**Well. That wasn't in the contract.**

I posted it. Closed the app. Drank my coffee.

By morning, it was the most upvoted comment in the forum's history.

The allied-packs reception was formal. Boring. The kind of event I was contractually obligated to attend as Jensen's liaison and personally had no interest in.

I wore a dress. Black. Simple. The kind of thing that didn't draw attention but didn't apologize for existing either. My wolf's aura was a low, constant hum under my skin—not aggressive, just present. Every ranked wolf in the room could feel it.

Lylah arrived with Greyson twenty minutes late.

She was wearing red. Too much jewelry. Her smile was brittle as she introduced herself to two visiting Alphas who had witnessed my silver wolf emergence during the training session.

They smiled politely. Nodded. Moved on.

By the end of the evening, neither of them remembered her name.

I watched from across the room, standing beside Jensen, holding a glass of wine I hadn't touched. Lylah's smile was getting thinner. Her laugh was getting louder. Greyson stood beside her, silent, his jaw tight.

A senior pack Alpha approached me. Bowed slightly. Addressed me formally as "Alpha Bennett" and offered recognition on behalf of his pack.

I accepted. Said thank you. Felt Greyson's eyes on me from across the room.

Lylah left early. Headache, she said.

Greyson stayed long enough to watch the recognition address. Then he left too. Without speaking to anyone.

I found Jensen in his office after the reception.

He was reading something on his tablet. Looked up when I walked in. Smiled.

"Eleanor."

I closed the door behind me. "What's your actual intention?"

Jensen set the tablet down. "With what?"

"This." I gestured vaguely. "Keeping me at Court. Appointing me your liaison. Blocking my neutral pack applications. All of it."

Jensen leaned back in his chair. "You want a list?"

"Yes."

"All right." He folded his hands. "One: Greyson Miller is unstable and fixated on you. Keeping you at Court keeps you under Lycan sovereign protection, which he cannot challenge without losing what's left of his territory. Two: your wolf just awakened with rare Alpha-lineage aura, which makes you politically significant whether you want to be or not. Neutral packs will try to recruit you for status. I'd rather you stay somewhere you can make that decision without pressure. Three: you're good at this job. Four: I like having you close."

I stared at him. "Those are not all the same kind of reason."

"No," Jensen agreed. "They're not."

I crossed my arms. "This is logistically inconvenient."

"Noted."

"And emotionally inadvisable."

"Also noted."

"I just escaped one Alpha's claim. I'm not interested in submitting to another."

Jensen's expression didn't change. "I'm not asking you to submit."

"Then what are you asking?"

"Nothing," Jensen said quietly. "I'm not keeping you, Eleanor. I'm keeping you close until the threat is resolved and you've had enough time to hear what your own wolf is telling you. Without suppressing it."

I opened my mouth. Closed it.

"My wolf doesn't make my decisions," I said finally.

"I know," Jensen said. "I'm talking to you."

The distinction landed somewhere I wasn't expecting it to.

I didn't have a rebuttal for that.

Jensen watched me. Waited.

"I need to think," I said.

"Take your time."

I turned to leave. Stopped at the door. Looked back.

Jensen was still watching me. His expression was open. Patient. Unbothered by the fact that I'd just walked into his office and demanded an explanation he didn't owe me.

"The tea," I said. "In my quarters. You didn't have to do that."

"I know," Jensen said. "I wanted to."

I held his gaze for another moment.

Then I walked out.

---

That night, I sat in my quarters and stared at the ceramic canister on the counter.

My wolf was awake. Present. Purring faintly at the edges of my awareness.

She wanted Jensen's scent. She wanted his proximity. She wanted things I had spent a year suppressing and a lifetime avoiding.

I picked up my phone. Opened the forum. Started typing a post.

Deleted it.

Started again.

Deleted that too.

My wolf stirred. Insistent.

I set the phone down. Looked at the tea canister. Reached for it.

My hand stopped halfway.

Because the door to my quarters opened, and Jensen walked in, holding a file folder and wearing the expression of someone who had just received very bad news.

"We have a problem," he said.

I stood. "What kind of problem?"

Jensen set the folder on the counter. Opened it. Inside was a formal tribunal summons, embossed with the Lycan Court seal.

"Greyson's filing a sovereign challenge," Jensen said quietly. "He's claiming I interfered with an active mate bond. He wants the territorial revocations overturned. And he wants you returned to Ironveil for formal arbitration."

I stared at the document. At Greyson's signature at the bottom. At the date—three days from now.

"He can't do that," I said. "The bond was severed. I signed the accord."

"He's arguing the severance was coerced," Jensen said. "That my intervention at the bar constituted sovereign overreach."

I looked up at him. "Can he win?"

Jensen met my eyes.

"If the tribunal rules in his favor," he said slowly, "you'll be required to return to Ironveil. Under his authority. Until the arbitration is complete."

My wolf snarled.

I felt the aura rise—silver, furious, barely contained.

Jensen's hand came to rest on my shoulder. Steady. Grounding.

"He won't win," Jensen said quietly.

I looked at the summons. At Greyson's signature.

At the date.

Three days.
