After My Alpha Rejected Me for My Sister

The coffee appeared on the third morning.

I came downstairs to find it sitting on my chair—the one by the window that caught the morning light, the one Zyaire had wordlessly ceded to me after the first week. The cup was from the café in Crescent Hollow, the one we'd passed on the way to the courthouse. My exact order: oat milk latte, extra shot, light foam, cinnamon.

I stared at it.

The warmest blanket was folded over the chair's arm, like always. The coffee sat on top of it, still steaming.

I picked up the cup and turned it in my hands. My wolf stirred—curious, awake, that steady pulse she'd been doing since the courthouse. I took a sip. It was perfect.

Zyaire was in the kitchen, pouring himself his usual terrible coffee. He didn't look up when I walked in.

"How did you know my order?" I asked.

He took a sip. "Observation."

"I've never ordered coffee in front of you."

"You reacted to the temperature of the courthouse café's default brew. And you added cinnamon to the pastry you didn't finish. I extrapolated."

I looked at him. He looked back, expression perfectly neutral.

"That's a lie," I said.

His mouth didn't move. But something shifted in his eyes—just barely, just enough that I saw it before he turned away.

"Drink your coffee, Shiloh."

He walked out.

I stood there alone, holding the cup, my chest doing something I didn't have language for.

That evening, I left the fox's head on the kitchen counter.

I didn't plan it. I just finished sculpting the piece—the ears finally symmetrical, the expression alert and curious—and set it down without wrapping it. Then I went upstairs before I could second-guess myself.

The next morning, it was on Zyaire's bookshelf.

Not hidden. Not tucked away. Right there between two pack-law texts, positioned carefully so the fox faced outward.

Neither of us mentioned it.

But when I came down for coffee that morning, there were two cups waiting.

---

The evening runs had become routine.

We met at the tree line at dusk. I attempted my shift—still a flickering, unstable half-form that burned through my energy too fast—and we ran. Zyaire matched my pace exactly, his massive dark Lycan form moving beside me like a shadow. We didn't speak. We didn't need to.

My wolf was stronger now. Not healed, not whole, but awake in a way that felt like progress.

Tonight, I wanted to push further.

We'd been running for twenty minutes when I stopped at the clearing we'd started using as a turnaround point. Zyaire circled back, shifting to human form as he approached.

"Problem?" he asked.

I shook my head. My half-shift flickered around me—fur rippling across my arms, claws extending and retracting. "I want to try something."

He waited.

I closed my eyes and reached deeper.

My wolf was there—awake, alert, closer to the surface than she'd been in weeks. I pulled at her, coaxing her forward, asking for more than the broken half-form I'd been managing. She resisted at first, the old instinct to protect herself from another failure. But I pushed anyway, gentle and insistent.

Something shifted.

My bones ached. My skin burned. The transformation pulled at me harder than it ever had, demanding more, reaching for something I'd thought was permanently out of reach.

And then, for approximately thirty seconds, I was almost there.

Silver fur rippled across my body—not in patches but in waves, covering me completely. My form solidified into something closer to wolf than human. I felt my spine lengthen, my shoulders broaden, an aura pulse outward that made the forest animals scatter.

I was bigger than I should have been. Stronger. The clearing went quiet around me.

Then it collapsed.

I hit the ground on hands and knees, gasping. The shift tore away from me like something ripped, leaving me human and shaking and utterly spent. My wolf retreated—not into dormancy, but close enough that I felt the absence like a physical wound.

I couldn't breathe properly. My lungs burned. My hands were shaking so hard I couldn't hold myself up.

Then Zyaire was there.

He dropped to a crouch in front of me, close enough that his scent—dark amber and woodsmoke—flooded the air around me completely. He didn't touch me. He just stayed there, letting his presence do what it did, his Lycan aura wrapping around me like a second skin.

My wolf stabilized.

Not immediately. But gradually, in response to his scent, she stopped retreating. The panic in my chest eased. My breathing steadied.

I looked up at him. He was watching me with an intensity that should have felt invasive but somehow didn't.

"You were silver," he said quietly.

Not a question. Not an observation. A declaration, delivered to the forest floor like he was marking it as fact.

My wolf stirred in response—steady, sustained, and warm.

I didn't know what to say. So I said nothing.

Zyaire stood and offered me his hand. I took it. He pulled me to my feet, his grip firm and deliberate, and for a moment we just stood there in the clearing, his hand still holding mine.

Then he let go and stepped back.

"Tomorrow," he said. "Same time."

He shifted and ran.

I stood alone in the clearing, pressing my hand to my sternum where my wolf was still awake and steady.

Something was happening.

I didn't know what it was.

But I knew, with a certainty I couldn't explain, that I wasn't ready for it to stop.

---

I didn't know Gideon was coming.

I didn't know Rachel had sent scouts. Didn't know they'd found me. Didn't know she'd framed my presence at the estate as danger, manipulation, something that required intervention.

I didn't know any of it.

Not until the night Zyaire came back from a perimeter check and stood in the doorway of the kitchen, his expression carefully neutral in a way that made my stomach drop.

"We have a problem," he said.

I set down the clay fox I'd been working on. "What kind of problem?"

"The kind that crosses borders without permission."

My wolf surged—alert, awake, and suddenly, violently afraid.

"Gideon," I whispered.

Zyaire's jaw tightened. "Yes."

He didn't say anything else.

He didn't need to.
