Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress

The vow broke me open at 11:47, three minutes before midnight, under a full moon I had helped choose for its light.

"I, Kian Voss, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Anastasia Frost, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck cracked before he finished my name.

I felt it happen the way you feel a bone go—not the pain first, but the wrongness. A hot line opened just beneath my jaw. Then the cold rushed in behind it, like a door slamming shut on a room I had lived in for three years. Something wet slid down my collarbone. I did not have to look to know it was silver. My blood had never bled any other color, and I had spent a decade making sure no one saw it.

Four hundred wolves stared. Not one of them breathed.

Inside my skull, my wolf screamed.

She had been quiet for so long I had almost forgotten the shape of her voice. Now she threw herself against the walls I had built at sixteen, and the walls shuddered. My knees hit the ceremonial stone. My palms hit next. The white silk of my Luna gown drank the silver at my throat and turned the color of a wound.

Get up, I told myself. Not yet. Not here.

I stayed down.

Above me, Kian moved. I heard the soft brush of ceremonial robes, the scrape of a boot on stone, and then a second scent stepped forward into the platform light. Iron and cheap cedar. Cali Thorne. She had been standing at the edge of the platform the whole time, and I had smelled her there and told myself she was watching security. I had told myself a lot of things.

Kian's teeth met her neck with a wet, deliberate sound.

She gasped. He held. The pack finally exhaled, all at once, a sound like wind moving through a dead field.

That was when I understood.

He hadn't decided tonight. He hadn't decided last week. Cali's dress was cut for the bite—low at the collar, reinforced at the shoulder. Her hair was pinned up. She had rehearsed the angle of her chin. This ceremony had been engineered around her body while I was still choosing what perfume to wear.

Inside my chest, the bond went last. It didn't snap. It emptied. Three years of him drained out of the space behind my sternum in one long pull, and left a shape there like a hollow tooth.

My wolf hit the wall again. Silver rose behind my eyes. My canines pushed against my gums.

No, I said to her, in the private dark of my own head. Not now. Not for them.

I locked her behind the same door I had been holding shut since I was sixteen years old. It took everything. It took more than everything. My vision tunneled. My fingers curled against the stone until my nails cracked.

And in the tunnel of that dark, my mind began to count.

Warrior rotations, missing on the northern border every third Thursday. Wolfsbane on Cali's hands the night of the harvest patrol. A supply shipment logged as grain that weighed twice what grain weighs. Kian's boots muddy on a night he'd told me he was in the study.

I had been storing these numbers for years without knowing I was building a case. Tonight the case had a spine.

I lifted my head.

Kian was looking at me over Cali's shoulder. His mouth was still red. His eyes—gold at the edges from the Alpha rise—waited for me to break. He had planned for a scream. He had planned for a collapse. He had probably planned for a plea.

I gave him none of it.

I got to my feet. Slowly. The silk peeled off the stone where my blood had glued it. I did not touch the mark on my neck. I did not touch anything.

"Luna Accord," I said. My voice came out low and level, the way I had trained it in three years of council rooms. "Sixty-day residency. I invoke it now, before the pack, before the elders, before the moon."

Something behind Kian's face moved. Not much. Just a flicker at the jaw. He hadn't expected me to know the clause existed, let alone how to invoke it in the correct order of witnesses.

I turned before he could answer. A rejected Luna does not need permission to walk off the platform she was rejected on. That was in the Accord too, if you read it carefully. I had read it very carefully. Three years ago. On my first day.

The pack parted for me the way water parts around a stone. Nobody spoke. Nobody reached out. Dara Voss, Kian's sister, stood in the second row with her hand halfway to her mouth. I saw her clock the silver on my collar. I saw her not say a word.

I walked until I was off the platform, off the ceremonial ground, into the black between the torches. Only then did I let my hand come up to my neck.

The mark was already cold. Cracked. Empty.

Behind me, on the platform, Kian's voice rose again into the hush, and I heard him say it—soft, private, meant for Cali, but carried on the wind because he was too arrogant to lower it.

"Riven will want the northern routes finalized before the blood moon. Tell him we're clear."
