Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Marked Another Luna, I Took Everything Back

I sat in my study on a Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by territorial maps and alliance records, and felt something I hadn't allowed myself in twenty years: excitement.

The surprise trip was coming together beautifully. Our California allied pack had confirmed the arrangements. The coastal route I'd mapped would take us through three territories Mathias had always wanted to see but never prioritized. Twenty years of mating deserved something more than the usual pack banquet. Something tender. Something that reminded us both why we'd chosen this.

I pulled up the California territory files to cross-reference travel permissions, and that's when I saw it.

A fund transfer. Recurring. Monthly. To a minor pack outside Los Angeles I'd never heard of.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist. Breathed. My wolf stirred uneasily.

It was probably nothing. A political donation. An investment Mathias had made without mentioning it. He handled certain financial matters independently. That was normal.

But the amount was significant. And it had been running for years.

I opened the pack financial database. Cross-referenced the territory name. Found a registration document that made my hands go very still on the keyboard.

Mathias Larson, Alpha. Rose Jenkins, Luna.

Three pups listed. Names I'd never heard. Birth dates spanning the last fifteen years.

I read it twice. Then a third time. The words didn't change.

My wolf was snarling now, a sound that had no outlet, no form. I pulled up more files. Found property records. Photographs of a modest pack house with a garden and a swing set. Found healer documentation listing Rose Jenkins as Mathias's marked mate.

Marked mate.

Dual marking was forbidden. A spiritual violation. You couldn't serve two bonds. The Moon Goddess didn't allow it. But the documents were official. Registered. Witnessed by a minor pack's elders who clearly hadn't cared enough about sacred law to refuse.

I took photographs of everything. My hands were steady. My breathing was controlled. Twenty years of Luna training had taught me to compartmentalize, and I was very, very good at my job.

When I finished, I closed the laptop and sat in the silence of my study. The room smelled like cedar oil and old paper. I'd claimed this space when we first built the pack house. Mathias never came in here. He said it felt too much like an archive.

I looked at the leather-bound territorial map on my desk. Every alliance my bloodline had ever held, annotated in my own handwriting. Ironvale's power structure, laid out in ink and memory.

All of it built on a foundation I'd just discovered was rotten.

I stood. Walked to the kitchen. Hudson's tablet was on the counter where he'd left it this morning before heading to his Gamma training.

I picked it up. Unlocked it. He used the same passcode he'd had since he was sixteen. I'd never invaded his privacy before. I'd never had a reason.

The photo album loaded. I scrolled back. Found last Thanksgiving.

Golden California hills. Blue sky. Seven wolves running together in a loose, joyful pack.

I recognized Celeste's silver-grey coat immediately. Hudson's darker fur beside her. Three smaller wolves I didn't know. And two adults bringing up the rear—one of them bearing a mark on her neck that I could identify even in wolf form.

Mathias's mark.

The next photo was human form. A family portrait on someone's deck. Mathias in the center, one arm around Rose Jenkins—blonde, smiling, younger than me by at least a decade. Celeste and Hudson on his other side. Three pups clustered around Rose's legs.

Everyone was smiling.

I zoomed in on my daughter's face. She looked happy. Relaxed. The way she used to look when she was small, before she started viewing every interaction as a political calculation.

I set the tablet down carefully. My wolf was howling now, a grief so deep it had no language.

My children knew.

They'd known for years. They'd spent Thanksgiving with their father's secret family. They'd run with those pups. They'd smiled for that photograph.

And they'd never said a word.

I drove to the university. Celeste was attending some social function for the pack youth council. Hudson was supposed to meet her there after training.

I found them both in a quiet hallway outside the event space. They saw my face and went very still.

"Mom," Celeste started. Her voice had that diplomatic tone she used when she was managing a situation. "What are you doing here?"

I held up my phone. Showed them the photograph.

Hudson's eyes widened. Celeste's jaw tightened.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

Neither of them answered.

"How long have you known your father marked another she-wolf and fathered three pups with her?"

"Mom, it's not—" Hudson started.

"How. Long."

Celeste lifted her chin. "Five years. Dad told us when I turned eighteen. He said it was a political arrangement. That Rose's pack had resources we needed. That you'd understand eventually."

"A political arrangement," I repeated. The words tasted like ash.

"You've always prioritized the pack over us," Celeste said, and there was something rehearsed about the phrasing. "Rose is warm. She's nurturing. She's easier to be around. Dad needed that. We all did."

I looked at my daughter. Saw Mathias's corruption staring back at me through her eyes. Saw a young she-wolf who'd learned to value inheritance over integrity, rank over family, comfort over truth.

"Please don't tell the elders," Hudson said suddenly. His voice cracked. "If this gets out, it'll destroy Dad's standing. My heir-Alpha position. Everything we've built."

Everything we've built.

Not everything I'd built. Not everything my bloodline had provided. Everything they stood to inherit.

I said nothing. Just looked at both of them for a long moment.

Then I turned and walked back to my car.

The drive back to Ironvale was dark and silent. I made three phone calls. The first to Aldric Voss, head of the regional Elder Council. The second to my mother. The third to Miriam Cross, head of my bloodline's healer network.

By the time I pulled into the pack house driveway, the formal rejection proceedings were already in motion.

I sat in my car for a moment, pressing two fingers to the inside of my wrist. My wolf was still howling. But beneath the grief, something else was rising.

Something cold and bright and lethally clear.

Twenty years. I'd given this pack twenty years. I'd built every alliance, trained every healer, negotiated every treaty. I'd made myself smaller so Mathias could appear larger. I'd sacrificed my warrior ambitions, my personal desires, my need for genuine connection.

And he'd spent those years living a second life in my shadow.

I got out of the car. Walked into the pack house. Went directly to my study and pulled out the leather-bound territorial map.

It was time to take back everything I'd given.
