Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Framed Me for Our Daughter’s Death

The lodge smelled like pine and old leather. I stood at the front desk, my fingers resting lightly on the polished wood, and watched the young receptionist flip through the reservation book. She had a nervous energy about her, the kind that came from working near pack territories without being part of one.

"We have the weekend available," she said, glancing up at me. "The whole property. It's quiet this time of year."

"Perfect." I kept my voice even. "I'll take it."

She started filling out the paperwork. I let my gaze drift to the windows overlooking the forest. The trees were thick here, old growth that had seen more than one pack rise and fall. Silverfang's border was less than ten miles east. Close enough that I could feel it like a bruise I hadn't touched yet.

I adjusted my collar without thinking. The Lycan mark sat just below my jawline, warm against my skin. Wells's scent clung to me faintly — cedar and smoke, the kind of smell that made unmated wolves instinctively step back. I'd gotten used to the space it created around me. The way crowds parted. The way conversations stopped.

The receptionist was halfway through the deposit form when the door opened behind me.

I didn't turn. I didn't need to. The shift in the air told me everything — the sudden weight of an Alpha's aura pressing into the room, the scent of at least six wolves moving in formation. And underneath it all, something that made my wolf stir for the first time in hours.

A voice I hadn't heard in ten years spoke from the doorway.

"We'll be taking this venue for the weekend."

Nathaniel.

I kept my eyes on the reservation book. The receptionist's pen froze mid-signature. I could feel her looking between us, trying to figure out the hierarchy, the threat level, whether she should call her manager.

"I'm sorry," she said carefully. "This guest was here first—"

"We're willing to pay triple." That was Amora. Her voice had the practiced smoothness of someone who'd spent years performing authority she didn't quite possess. "Silverfang Pack has priority in this region."

I finished signing my name on the form. My handwriting was steady. I slid the paper back across the desk and finally turned around.

Nathaniel stood ten feet away, flanked by six packmates in matching jackets. He looked older. The lines around his eyes were deeper, and there was something brittle in the way he held himself — like a man who'd been holding his breath for years and forgotten how to let it out. His wolf was there behind his eyes, grey and diminished, and the moment our gazes met I felt it slam against him with enough force to make him grip the edge of a nearby chair.

Amora stood at his side, her posture perfect, her expression carefully neutral. She wore the kind of dress that cost more than the healer supplies Silverfang used to run on. Her eyes swept over me with the particular disdain of someone cataloging flaws.

"Rogue stench," she said quietly, just loud enough for the packmates to hear. "Fouling the whole lobby."

I didn't react. I looked at Nathaniel and waited.

He stepped forward. His Alpha aura rolled out ahead of him, heavy and commanding, the kind of presence that should have made every wolf in the room lower their eyes. The receptionist flinched. Two of his packmates shifted their weight.

I felt nothing.

"Delaney." His voice dropped into that particular register I remembered too well — Alpha tone, designed to compel obedience on a genetic level. "Bare your neck. Acknowledge my authority in this territory."

The command hit me and slid off like rain on glass.

I watched his expression shift. Confusion first, then something closer to panic. Alpha tone didn't fail. It didn't just not work. The fact that I was still standing there, meeting his eyes, my wolf utterly calm inside my chest — it meant the hierarchy had broken in a way he couldn't explain.

Behind him, his packmates exchanged glances. One of them took a half-step back.

I picked up my copy of the reservation form and folded it carefully. "Your jurisdiction over me ended the night you signed my rejection papers," I said. My voice was quiet. I didn't need volume. "This lodge is reserved. I hope your banquet venue search goes well."

I walked past him toward the door. Nathaniel's hand shot out — not touching me, just hovering near my shoulder, his fingers trembling slightly. I could smell the desperation coming off him in waves, sour and thick.

"Wait," he said. His Alpha tone was gone. This was just a man's voice, raw and unsteady. "We need to talk. About—"

I kept walking.

Amora's voice followed me out. "Nathaniel, let her go. She's nobody."

I stepped into the parking lot and let the door close behind me. The autumn air was cold and clean. I unlocked my car, slid into the driver's seat, and sat there for a moment with my hands on the wheel.

My wolf was still calm. No rage, no grief, no phantom pull toward the bond that had been severed a decade ago. Just a steady, patient certainty that everything we'd been building toward was finally, inevitably beginning.

I started the engine and drove toward the lakeside cabin. Toward Wells. Toward home.

The lodge disappeared in my rearview mirror. Behind me, I knew Nathaniel was still standing in that lobby, trying to understand why his Alpha tone had shattered against me like glass.
