Chapter 1 of After My Alpha Called Me a Broken Luna

The Mate Ceremony begins at seven o'clock on a Saturday, and by seven-fourteen, I have done the math.

Three hundred wolves fill the Ashford Pack house ballroom, their faces turned toward the dais where I stand in ceremonial white. The chandeliers are warm. The flowers are exactly the ones I ordered — cream roses, no fragrance I can detect, because I cannot detect anything. My wolf is silent. She has always been silent. I have explained this to myself so many times that the explanation has worn smooth, like a river stone. Broken wolves still function. Broken wolves still lead.

Bowen stands across the dais, composed and handsome and utterly still, and I am watching the doors because something about the angle of his stillness is wrong.

The doors open.

Vienna Moore walks in wearing white.

Not guest white. Not winter white. Luna-ceremony white — the specific shade, the specific cut, the cascade of seed-pearl beadwork along the bodice that I spent six weeks selecting with a seamstress who told me the pattern was custom. Identical. Down to the hem length.

I count four seconds.

In four seconds I calculate: a gown like that requires a minimum eight-week order lead time. Bowen has not flinched. He has not looked at me. His hands are relaxed at his sides. Vienna's chin is lifted at the precise angle of a woman who has rehearsed her entrance. The pack has gone very quiet in the particular way of people who already know the ending of a story and are waiting to see if the last person in the room figures it out.

I figured it out eight weeks ago, apparently. I simply did not have the evidence yet.

"Childhood packmate," Bowen says, to no one in particular. Still not looking at me.

I reach into my sleeve and close my fingers around the folded document I placed there this morning — not because I expected this exact moment, but because I have spent three years as Luna-designate learning that the difference between a woman with options and a woman without them is preparation.

Then I step to the microphone.

The feedback whine cuts through the ballroom. Every head turns.

"I, Gemma Thomas, heiress of Ashford Pack," I say, and my voice is very clear, "reject you, Bowen Grant, Alpha of Ashford, as my mate and bonded partner. I reject the bond, the claim, and all obligations therein, under full witness of this pack and the Moon Goddess whose ceremony you have chosen to desecrate."

The room does not breathe.

I cross the dais and place the folded document in Bowen's hand. He takes it reflexively, which is the most honest thing he has done all evening.

"Itemized," I tell him. "Ceremony costs, three seasons of Luna-designate service at standard pack rate, and emotional damages assessed at fair market value. The total is on page two. You have thirty days."

I walk out through absolute silence. My wolf does not stir. My chest is dry. I feel nothing biological — only the clean, cold satisfaction of a ledger that finally balances.

---

Bowen finds me in the corridor outside the Alpha's quarters at half past ten.

I hear him before I see him — the particular cadence of a man who has decided that volume is a substitute for authority. Then the Alpha-tone hits, rolling through the hallway like a pressure change before a storm, and I watch the two pack members at the far end of the corridor instinctively drop their chins and bare their necks.

I do not.

I have never been able to feel the compulsion Alpha-tone relies on. For years I thought this was another symptom of my broken wolf. Tonight, standing in the corridor while Bowen's voice calls me scentless, broken, unfit to occupy a bonded Luna's residence, I think perhaps it is the only gift my condition ever gave me.

"Section twelve," I say, when he finishes. I pull the Ashford Pack bylaws from the shelf beside the door — leather-bound, annotated in my own handwriting, because I read them cover to cover the month after my engagement was formalized. "Subsection four. Residency protections for an unmated heiress of direct Alpha blood are not contingent on mate status. They are contingent on bloodline. Mine predates yours by two generations."

I dial Luciano Hernandez.

"Gamma Hernandez," I say, when he picks up. "Please escort Alpha Grant's personal belongings to the pack border. Tonight. All of them."

Bowen stares at me. His jaw is tight. The Alpha-tone has nowhere to go — there is no biological lever in me to pull, and he knows it now in a way he perhaps did not know it an hour ago.

He leaves.

I close the bylaws and set them back on the shelf. The quarters are very quiet. Through the window, the pack house courtyard is dark, and somewhere below, I can hear Vienna's voice — low, careful, already recalibrating.

I open my ledger to a fresh page.

Bowen will not accept administrative defeat quietly. The next move is already forming in the shape of that voice drifting up from the courtyard, and I intend to be three steps ahead of it before morning.
