After I Rejected My Mate, The Lycan Prince Claimed Me

The whispers started three days after Dane's humiliation at the border.

I first noticed it during a routine patrol with Marcus and two Silverfang warriors. We were marking the western boundary when a group from the Crescent Ridge Pack—one of Silverfang's allies—crossed paths with us. Standard protocol was a brief nod, maybe a few words about territorial updates. Professional. Polite.

But the Crescent Ridge Beta, a woman named Carla with sharp eyes and a sharper tongue, looked me up and down like I was something she'd scraped off her boot.

"So this is the one," she said to Marcus, not to me. "The rogue whore who rejected her fated mate and threw herself at a Lycan Prince."

My wolf snarled. I kept my face blank.

Marcus went very still. "Watch your mouth."

Carla smiled thinly. "Just repeating what everyone's saying. Black Moon's allies have been very... informative." She glanced at me again. "Ambitious little thing, aren't you? Rejecting a mate bond for a better title."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Hard.

"We're done here," Marcus said flatly. He gestured for us to move. We did.

But the damage was done. I felt it in the way Carla's warriors stared. In the way Marcus's jaw stayed tight for the rest of the patrol. In the way he didn't tell me it would be fine.

Because it wasn't fine.

Etta had pivoted. Physical retrieval had failed. Dane's attempt to reclaim me through Alpha authority had ended in public humiliation. So she had chosen a different weapon: reputation.

And she was good at it.

Over the next week, the whispers multiplied. I heard fragments during training sessions, caught hostile glances from visiting wolves, felt the shift in how allied pack members looked at me. Rogue whore. Ambitious climber. Rejected her fated mate out of greed. Threw herself at Griffin for status.

It was a coordinated campaign. Etta had spent years building relationships with allied Lunas, attending ceremonies, playing the role of devoted sister and perfect pack hostess. She knew exactly who to whisper to, exactly which channels to use. Group mind-links. Luna circles. Allied pack gossip networks.

She painted me as the villain. And people believed her.

Griffin said nothing about it publicly. But I saw the way his Gammas watched me more closely during patrols. Saw the tension in Marcus's shoulders when another allied pack sent a formal request for "clarification" on my status.

I was becoming a political liability.

I told myself it didn't matter. I had survived eight years as an Omega. I could survive rumors.

But my wolf was restless. Angry. She wanted to fight back, to tear into Etta's throat and make her choke on her lies.

I told her to wait.

Marcus found me in the training yard on the eighth day.

I was running drills alone—strikes, blocks, footwork patterns I had taught myself years ago when Black Moon's trainers wouldn't waste time on an Omega. Sweat soaked through my shirt. My muscles burned. It felt good.

Marcus waited until I finished the sequence before speaking.

"We need to talk," he said.

I grabbed a towel and wiped my face. "About the smear campaign."

He didn't look surprised. "Yes."

We walked to the edge of the yard, away from the other warriors. Marcus pulled a folded map from his jacket and spread it on a bench. It showed Silverfang's territory and the surrounding allied packs.

"Two packs have formally requested clarification on your status," he said, pointing to markers on the map. "Crescent Ridge and Ironwood. Both have strong ties to Black Moon through trade agreements. Etta's been working the Luna network hard. She's framing you as unstable, manipulative, a threat to pack stability."

I studied the map. "And Griffin?"

"Griffin doesn't care what they think," Marcus said bluntly. "But he does care about Silverfang's alliances. If this escalates, we could lose trade routes. Border support. Diplomatic leverage."

I looked up. "You're telling me I'm a problem."

"I'm telling you the situation," Marcus said evenly. "What you do with the information is up to you."

It was the first time in years a pack official had spoken to me like I was capable of strategic thought. Like I had value beyond servitude.

I asked three questions.

"Who controls the narrative in Crescent Ridge?"

"Their Luna, Helena. She's traditional. Values ceremony and proper protocol."

"Does Silverfang have documentation of Black Moon's expansion history?"

"Some. Why?"

"Because I built half of it," I said quietly. "And I can prove it."

Marcus's eyes narrowed. "You kept records?"

"I kept everything." I folded the map. "I need an armed escort. I'm going back to Black Moon."

---

Four Gammas accompanied me. Marcus led. We crossed the border at midday, when the training fields were full and the pack house buzzed with activity.

Wolves stopped and stared.

I walked through Black Moon territory with Lycan authority at my back. The same wolves who had sneered at me as an Omega now watched in silence as I passed. Some looked confused. Some looked angry. A few looked afraid.

Good.

My old quarters were in the east wing, ground floor, a small room with a narrow bed and a single window. I had lived there for eight years. It smelled the same—dust and old wood and the faint scent of the lavender soap I used to buy from the market.

My mother's locket was in the top drawer, wrapped in cloth. I picked it up, felt its weight in my palm, and slipped it into my pocket.

The documentation was harder to find. I had hidden it beneath a loose floorboard under the bed—maps, supply logs, expansion proposals I had drafted in the early years when Dane still listened to my suggestions. Proof that Black Moon's growth had not been his vision alone.

I gathered the papers and turned to leave.

That's when I passed the Alpha suite.

The door was open.

Dane and Etta were inside. She was draped across the bed in casual possession, wearing one of his shirts. He sat at the desk, head in his hands. They looked comfortable. Familiar. Like this was routine.

Etta saw me first.

She smiled.

I didn't stop walking.
