Chapter 1 of After I Got Pregnant With My Husband’s Brother’s Baby

The phone rang at 1:47 AM.

I knew before I opened my eyes. The ringtone was the same one Colin had set for her three years ago — a soft chime, nothing like the sharp buzz he used for business calls. I lay still in the dark and listened to him answer on the second ring.

"Bridget."

His voice changed. It always did. The cold efficiency he used with everyone else — including me — melted into something careful. Concerned. Alive.

I turned my head on the pillow and watched his silhouette against the window. Manhattan glittered forty floors below us, all those lights and lives, and I felt nothing but the familiar weight in my chest.

"I'll be right there," he said.

He was already out of bed, moving toward the closet. I watched him dress in the dark — suit pants, white shirt, the motions automatic. Five years of marriage and I could map his routines with my eyes closed. He had probably done this a dozen times. Maybe more.

I sat up slowly. "Again?"

He didn't look at me. He was buttoning his shirt. "Don't wait up."

That was it. No explanation. No apology. Not even the pretense of one.

The door closed behind him with a soft, expensive click.

I sat in the enormous bed in the enormous penthouse and felt the last thread snap.

It didn't break with rage or tears or any of the dramatic things I used to imagine in the first year of this marriage. It broke cleanly. Quietly. Like a surgical cut.

I was done.

I got out of bed and walked barefoot across the cold marble floor to the living room. Everything in this place was perfect. Immaculate. Lifeless. Colin had rules for everything — no takeout containers, no coffee after six PM, no music past ten, no mess, no warmth, no proof that actual human beings lived here. I had followed them all for five years. I had made myself small and quiet and acceptable.

And he had left me alone in the dark at 1:47 AM to go to her.

I picked up my phone.

Silas answered on the first ring. His voice was alert, not groggy. "Sofia?"

"Can you come here?" I said.

There was a pause. Not hesitation. Just the space of him understanding everything I wasn't saying.

"I'm on my way."

He arrived in forty minutes. I didn't know how he got past building security. I didn't care. When I opened the door, he stood in the hallway in jeans and a dark sweater, his hair still damp like he'd been in the shower when I called. He looked at me with those steady grey eyes — Colin's eyes, but warmer, softer, entirely different.

"I'm done," I said.

He stepped inside. The door closed behind him.

We didn't talk. There was nothing to say that hadn't already been said in eight years of careful distance, stolen glances at family dinners, conversations that ended too quickly because staying longer would have made the truth too obvious.

He touched my face. I leaned into his hand. And then we were in the guest suite — the one Colin never used, the one that existed only for appearances — and Silas was kissing me like I was something precious he'd been holding his breath for.

I felt no guilt. Only the strange, startling sensation of breathing freely for the first time in five years.

When morning came, the sky outside the windows was pale grey. I lay with my head on Silas's chest and listened to his heartbeat and felt nothing but clarity.

The front door opened.

Colin was back.

I heard him move through the penthouse — the familiar rhythm of his return. Shoes by the door. Keys on the hall table. He didn't call out. He never did. He walked straight to the master suite and I heard the shower start.

Silas's hand tightened on my shoulder. "Sofia—"

"It's fine," I said quietly.

And it was.

I got up, pulled on a robe, and walked out to the kitchen. I made eggs and toast and bacon — greasy, forbidden breakfast that would have made Colin's jaw tighten in disapproval. I made coffee. I sat at the counter and ate slowly, tasting everything.

Colin appeared twenty minutes later in a fresh suit, hair still damp, already scrolling through his phone. He poured himself black coffee and sat down across from me. He glanced at my plate once, frowned slightly, then returned to his screen.

He didn't ask where I'd been. He didn't ask if I was okay.

He didn't notice anything at all.

I watched him for a long moment — this stranger I'd been married to for five years — and felt absolutely nothing.

Then I picked up my phone and called Diana.

She answered on the second ring. "Sof? It's seven in the morning."

"I need to talk," I said.

"Come over. Now."

I stood up, left my plate on the counter, and walked toward the bedroom to get dressed. Colin didn't look up.

An hour later I was sitting in Diana's cramped, warm apartment in Brooklyn with terrible coffee and her cat in my lap, and I told her everything. The phone call at 1:47 AM. Silas. The guest suite. The morning after.

Diana listened without interrupting. When I finished, she leaned back against her couch and looked at me with fierce, bright eyes.

"It's about time," she said quietly.

I started to cry. Not sad tears. Something else. Relief, maybe. Or recognition.

Diana reached over and took my hand.

"You're not going back," she said. It wasn't a question.

"No," I said. "I'm not."

And I meant it.
