Chapter 1 of After His Rejection, My Wolf Finally Awakened

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, three days before my wedding.

I felt it snap the second Easton opened his mouth. The half-formed mark on my neck—still warm from blooming sixty seconds earlier—went ice-cold. Then it cracked. Not metaphorically. I heard it crack, a sound like frozen glass under pressure, and the pain that followed wasn't in my chest or my head. It was everywhere. In my bones. In the space between my ribs. In the hollow behind my eyes.

Wild honeysuckle and thunderstorm ozone. That's what Easton smelled on me when his nostrils flared mid-ceremony. I watched his wolf surge behind his eyes—gold bleeding into blue—and heard the howl that tore out of him: *Mate.*

For one suspended moment, I believed it. I believed I finally belonged.

Then his gaze slid past me to Juliana Voss in her Luna-candidate gown, and his expression went cold. Calculating. Like he was running numbers.

"I, Easton Cole, heir of Silverfang, reject you, Samantha Ashford, as my mate and future Luna."

His voice carried. Alpha heir's tone, clear and formal, pitched for the five hundred wolves assembled in the stone courtyard. The ceremonial fire crackled behind him. Someone's phone camera light blinked red in the crowd.

The mark on my neck burned where it had been warm. The bond—sixty seconds old, barely formed—ripped through my chest like a wire yanked hard and fast. My knees buckled. I hit the stone courtyard floor palms-first, and the impact sang up through my wrists.

Juliana's laugh cut through the silence. Bright. Deliberate. She wanted everyone to hear it.

I looked up. Five hundred wolves stared back. Deltas. Gammas. Omegas I'd shared kitchen shifts with. The healer who'd bandaged my training injuries. Not one of them moved.

Not one.

I pressed my right thumb hard against the inside of my left wrist. Breathed in. Held it. Breathed out. The pain in my chest was still there—a raw, scraped-hollow feeling—but my hands stopped shaking.

I stood up. No one helped me.

Easton had already turned away. Juliana's hand rested on his forearm, her fingers pale against his jacket. She leaned in and whispered something that made him nod. They looked good together. Matched. Like a photograph someone would frame.

I walked. Back straight. Eyes forward. I didn't run. I didn't look back.

Juliana's laughter followed me all the way to the pack house doors.

---

My room was on the lowest floor of the pack house, in the wing where they put the wolves no one wanted to see. Small. Single window. Shared bathroom down the hall. I'd stopped noticing it years ago.

I sat on the edge of the bed and opened my field notebook. Worn spiral binding. Pages soft from two years of handling. I kept it in the drawer under my spare training clothes, which meant no one looked for it.

I wrote the date. Tuesday, October 17th. 10:14 PM.

Then I wrote Easton's exact words. Every one of them. Formal rejection vow, witnessed by five hundred pack members. Legally binding. Irreversible.

Then I started the list.

Every wolf who watched. Every wolf who said nothing. I filled most of the page. My handwriting stayed neat. I made sure of that.

When I finished, I closed the notebook and slid it back into the drawer. My hands were steady now. The pain in my chest had settled into something duller. Constant. Like a low hum I'd have to learn to live with.

I didn't cry. I'd learned young that crying in Silverfang was an invitation.

I lay down on top of the covers, still in my ceremony clothes, and stared at the ceiling. Somewhere in the pack house above me, Easton was probably celebrating. Juliana would make sure of that.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist again. Counted my breaths. Fell asleep sometime after midnight.

---

The next morning I reported to training at six AM, same as always.

Juliana was waiting in the corridor outside the training hall. Two Delta guards flanked her. Both bigger than me. Both looking anywhere but at my face.

"Samantha." Juliana's smile was thin and sharp. "Training privileges are revoked. Permanently. You're reassigned to Omega kitchen duties effective immediately."

I looked at her. Didn't speak.

"Do you understand?" She stepped closer. Her perfume—something floral and expensive—hit me first. Then her father's Beta authority rolled off her in a wave. Not quite Alpha tone, but close. Borrowed power.

"Kneel," she said.

The command hit me square in the chest. I felt it land. Felt it try to take root.

My knees didn't bend.

Juliana blinked. The Delta guards shifted. One of them glanced at the other.

"I said kneel." Juliana's voice went harder. She channeled more of her father's authority, and I felt the pressure increase. It rolled over me like water off stone.

I stood exactly where I was.

For one visible second, Juliana's composure cracked. Her smile faltered. Her eyes went wide.

Then she laughed—sharp, too loud—and waved a hand. "Fine. Kitchen duties. Report to the head Omega by seven. Dismissed."

I walked past her. Past the Delta guards. Down the corridor toward the kitchens.

Behind me, I heard one of the Deltas whisper, "What the hell was that?"

Juliana didn't answer.

I turned the corner, found an empty storage closet, and pulled out my field notebook. Wrote the date. Wrote what happened. Wrote the exact moment Juliana's face changed when the command didn't work.

Then I wrote one more line at the bottom of the page:

*Why didn't I kneel?*

I didn't have an answer yet. But I was going to find one.

I closed the notebook. Slid it into my jacket pocket. Headed for the kitchens.

Somewhere in the pack house above me, Easton was waking up next to his chosen Luna candidate. Somewhere in the outer territory, my father—the quiet groundskeeper everyone ignored—was probably mending fences in the cold.

And somewhere deep inside me, something that had been sleeping for eighteen years stirred.

Just once.

Then went still again.
