Chapter 1 of After Her Rise, She Shone Brightly
Shawn and I had been feuding openly and covertly for six years.
He forced my mother to fall from a building and become paralyzed and I leaked secrets, which bankrupted him.
Everyone thought we would torture each other for the rest of our lives.
When we met again, he had made a comeback and answered reporters’ questions with ease.
“Back then, a few of us classmates said, ‘Find someone you love by 18, get married by 25 and have a child before 28. Shawn, how far along are you?’”
“I’m almost engaged.”
“Then you’re the fastest among us here!”
I twirled the ring on my ring finger. Actually, I’d already fulfilled all three of those goals.
——
The girl who entered the room was Shawn’s fiancée. She was young, beautiful and polite.
After nodding to each of us, she sat down next to Shawn.
She didn’t look at the people around her, but instead focused her gaze on me.
I could feel the probing glances from everyone around me. A few years ago, my affair with Shawn became public knowledge.
I picked up my bag and walked out. The two people beside me thought I was going to go up on stage and tear that girl’s face apart.
They subconsciously held me down. I raised an eyebrow at them.
“Elvira, where are you going?”
“The restroom.”
“Oh, haha, sure.”
They sat down and laughed. Before leaving, I heard their whispers.
“It’s been two years since we last met. Elvira has calmed down a lot.”
“That’s right. She scared me to death just now. With her previous personality, she wouldn’t only have scratched Thora’s face.”
“After two years, she still can’t let go. She couldn’t stand it and immediately ran away when she saw Thora.”
“You’re alright. Have them withdraw the security.”
I stepped out and saw two rows of bodyguards standing outside.
When they saw me, their faces tensed.
The leader touched his headset and led his men back.
I sat on the lawn outside and talked on the phone to my daughter. She was telling me a new story she’d learned today on the other end of the phone.
Shawn’s interview had also moved outside. We always found each other instantly in the crowd.
“Mr. Garraway, do you have anything to say to the person who was victimized and bankrupted?”
He chuckled and looked at the camera.
“I saw her today. Her eyes are still as beautiful as ever. If I had the chance, I would dig them out myself and give them to my fiancée as a necklace.”
Everyone present was shocked by his words.
It was just a harsh remark, nothing compared to the six years of hatred we’d endured.
“Did you take any revenge back then?”
“Does it count if I crippled her mother?”
I swirled my wine glass, read the children’s stories on my phone and calmly soothed my daughter.
My indifferent attitude irritated Shawn.
Or perhaps, we both wanted each other to die without any reason.
Shawn sat beside me with a finger on my phone. He glanced at me and chuckled.
“The Great Compassion Mantra suits you better.”
Shawn introduced the people behind him. “Thora, this is our class monitor from college, Elvira.”
Thora smiled sweetly and extended her hand to me.
“Elvira, nice to meet you. Hello, my name is Thora and I’m Shawn’s fiancée.”
Just as they were expecting me to go crazy, I simply said, “Hello.”
Shawn narrowed his eyes, as if he could see right through me.
Then he sneered and thought I was being too pretentious.
