My Husband Abandoned Me Pregnant to Save His Mistress’s Cat

Sapphire moves with the unhurried confidence of a woman who has rehearsed this moment. She picks up the crystal flute from the table—the one with the lipstick mark on the rim, the one she's been holding for the last twenty minutes. Her fingers are elegant, pale, steady. She lets it drop.

The shatter is clean and loud. The crystal breaks into pieces that scatter across the marble floor like stars. Some of them catch the low light and throw it back in fragments. Others lie dull and dangerous, waiting.

She looks at me. Her eyes are wide and wet and she is smiling.

"Oh," she says softly, as though the glass slipped. As though it was an accident. As though she feels bad.

She reaches for her wrist. The bracelet there is delicate, expensive—tiny crystals caught in a silver setting. It catches the light as she unclasps it. She holds it up, letting it dangle, letting it spin.

"This was a gift," she says, and her voice is light, almost conversational. "From Bruno. For our anniversary. It reminds me of—" She stops. She doesn't need to finish. She lets it fall.

The metal and crystals hit the marble and scatter into the shards. The sound is smaller this time but somehow more final. She turns toward Bruno, her lower lip trembling with a precision that would make an actress weep with envy.

"She reminds me of that night," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "The night your mother—"

She doesn't finish. She doesn't need to. She folds her hands in her lap and looks down at them, the perfect picture of someone trying to contain their grief.

I see the change in Bruno's face. It's like watching a mask slide down over features I used to know. His jaw tightens. His eyes go dark and flat. He stands up from the couch in one fluid motion and crosses the room toward me.

His hand tangles in my hair before I can step back. He yanks my head down and shoves me forward. My knees hit the marble. The glass and crystal underneath slice through my thin uniform pants immediately. I feel the cuts open—sharp, clean lines of pain that bloom into something warm and wet.

"Stay," he says. His voice is low and even. "Stay right there."

I look down. Blood is already beginning to pool on the marble, spreading out in thin rivulets between the shards. My blood. My knees. I think about Haisley's knees, smooth and unmarked, and I try not to flinch.

"You want to know what I think?" Bruno's hand comes down on my shoulder, pressing me down. "I think you should stay right there until you apologize. For every year you stole from my family. For every moment of pain you caused. For everything."

I can hear the room breathing around us. Someone shifts on the leather couch. Someone else laughs softly at something on the screen. Nobody moves to help. Nobody moves at all.

Sapphire is watching from the couch. Her legs are crossed, one foot swinging gently back and forth. Her expression is gentle, sorrowful—the face of a woman performing grief for an audience. She reaches for her glass and takes a small sip, never taking her eyes off me.

"Kowtow," Bruno says. He pushes down harder on my shoulder. "Press your forehead to the floor. Beg for forgiveness like you should have done ten years ago. Beg for mercy like the worthless piece of—"

He stops. He doesn't need to finish. He just pushes down harder.

I think about Haisley. I think about the ICU. I think about two hundred thousand dollars and what it means when you don't have it. I think about county facilities and what happens to children there when the oxygen runs out.

I begin to lower my forehead toward the glass-covered floor. Blood runs freely from my knees now, spreading out in a small, growing pool. The cuts are deep. They will need stitches. They will scar. But I am thinking about Haisley's face when she wakes up and sees me there, and I am thinking about the way she pushes food across the tray toward me, and I am thinking about the fact that I am still here, still breathing, still fighting.

I do not scream.
